Former South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The foundation announced on Monday that Pandor will succeed Professor Njabulo Ndebele, who is retiring after more than a decade in the role.

Pandor will be the third chairperson since the foundation’s establishment in 1999. She will officially take over on 1 October, having recently retired from active politics at the end of the sixth term.

“Dr Pandor offers the foundation just what it needs for the next phase of its development,” said Ndebele in a statement.

Pandor expressed her honour at taking on the role, stating, “In a world facing so many complex challenges, mobilising Madiba’s legacy becomes more important than ever.”

The announcement comes ahead of the 22nd Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture, to be delivered by Nobel Prize-winning novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah on Saturday.
