Armed robbers have reportedly carried out a brazen heist at an Ecobank branch in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, potentially stealing up to $5 million (£3.9m).

The incident is said to have occurred around 3:30 PM local time on Thursday at the bank’s branch on Fife Street and 9th Avenue.

Initial reports suggest that multiple gunmen, allegedly armed with AK-47 rifles, overpowered Safeguard security guards outside the bank. Eyewitnesses claim the guards offered no resistance as the robbers seized cash boxes.

Unconfirmed footage appears to show assailants loading boxes onto a white Ford Ranger single cab, which was reportedly used as the getaway vehicle.

A bank official, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggested the $5 million figure, but this amount has not been independently verified.

Police have not yet released an official statement on the incident. Authorities have been contacted for confirmation and further details.

Details are still emerging in this developing story.
