Staff ReporterIn a tragic development reported by the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), a catastrophic train accident occurred between Mutare and Machipanda around 21:00 hrs on Monday, 19 February 2024.
Preliminary findings point to a grave mechanical failure, with the locomotive experiencing brake failure. The train, hauling 14 wagons carrying nine export chrome concentrates and five granite blocks, became uncontrollable and was unable to navigate a sharp curve, resulting in its derailment and subsequent plunge into a gorge.
The accident led to the tragic loss of three NRZ crew members who were unable to escape and were tragically trapped. The identities of these crew members are being withheld pending notification of their next of kin.
The NRZ has expressed its deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of the deceased, recognizing the dedication and service of the lost crew members. The railway family mourns their loss, and thoughts and prayers are extended in this time of mourning.
