In a swift response to the bombshell resignation of Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) founder Nelson Chamisa, the nine-member interim steering committee, led by Secretary-General Sengezo Tshabangu, is set to convene an urgent meeting today. The committee, featuring prominent figures such as Dingilizwe Tshuma, Albert Mhlanga, Khaliphani Phugeni, and others, is tasked with strategizing on the ramifications of Chamisa’s departure and determining the party’s path forward.

Chamisa’s surprise announcement, delivered yesterday, highlighted concerns about the alleged infiltration and hijacking of the CCC by Zanu-PF and its political agents. Tshabangu and his team now face the pressing challenge of managing the fallout from Chamisa’s abrupt exit, especially with by-elections scheduled for February 3, 2024.

The former CCC president’s decision coincided with the controversial recall and replacement of MPs, senators, and councillors by Tshabangu’s supporters and Zanu-PF representatives. The situation escalated with a recent court ruling, preventing 23 pro-Chamisa recalled MPs from participating in the upcoming by-elections.

Expressing disappointment over the lack of official communication from Chamisa, Tshabangu’s committee aims to address the situation during today’s meeting and decide on the party’s trajectory without its founding leader. Mbuso Siso, the committee’s treasurer, emphasized the importance of adhering to the party’s constitution and assessing the roadmap towards the congress.

“I will call him – Chamisa – to confirm that he has quit the party. We need to find out more on his announcement and determine what we need from him after his departure,” stated Siso, reflecting the committee’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

As acting treasurer-general, Siso underscored the need to scrutinize the party’s financial records, including donations and expenditures. The committee asserts itself as the legitimate governing structure of the CCC, stepping into a leadership role in the wake of Chamisa’s resignation.

With Tshabangu at the helm, the CCC interim committee faces the complex task of navigating internal divisions and ensuring the party’s continuity. As the political landscape in Zimbabwe remains volatile, the decisions made in today’s meeting will undoubtedly shape the future trajectory of the CCC.
