In a tragic start to the New Year, two women lost their lives during celebrations in Harare’s Tafara suburb, attended by about 2,000 people, as reported by the Zimbabwe Republic Police on Monday.

The incident occurred at Kasi Kasi Bar, Tafara, around 0010 hours on New Year’s Day. Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the police spokesperson, stated initial reports indicated severe overcrowding and traffic issues near Kamunhu Shopping Centre leading to Tafara, with roads blocked and vehicles parked haphazardly.

Despite police efforts, the response was hampered by poor lighting conditions. Three women were found near Kasi Kasi Bar and the main road connecting Mabvuku and Tafara. They were rushed to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, where two were declared deceased.

The police are conducting a thorough investigation, cautioning against premature conclusions and awaiting post-mortem results to determine the cause of death.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi condemned the unruly behavior of motorists and the public during the New Year’s Eve celebrations and urged liquor outlets to ensure adequate parking to prevent future chaos and stampedes.
