Boris Johnson has said the UK will offer support to the new government in Zimbabwe if the new president delivers reform.

Emmerson Mnangagwa took over as leader of the country after Robert Mugabe resigned in the wake of a coup against him.

He has promised his government will focus on growing the Zimbabwean economy.

The Foreign Secretary made a statement to say recent events in the country offered “a moment of hope.”

Johnson added that he had been encouraged by President Mnangagwa’s words and said Britain shared the vision of Zimbabwe being “prosperous, peaceful, and democratic.”

He said Britain would be willing to work with him as long as he acted upon his words.

Johnson is expected to meet representatives of the 18 African Commonwealth member-states ahead of a key summit in London in 2018.
