HARARE- Former Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa has written an open letter to President Emmerson Mnangagwa proposing a Government of National Unity to address Zimbabwe’s mounting political and economic challenges. The appeal mirrors a recent similar move by Mozambican opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane.
A source close to Chamisa, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed the letter will be made public soon. The timing appears designed to preempt Mnangagwa’s anticipated address to the nation.
The letter demands immediate political dialogue, electoral reforms, and restoration of judicial independence. It also calls for anti-corruption measures and improved pay for civil servants.
“President Chamisa believes a GNU is essential for stabilizing the country and fostering cooperation across political divides,” the source said. International partners have reportedly expressed support for the initiative.
The proposal echoes Zimbabwe’s 2009 power-sharing agreement between former President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
Political analyst Dr. Tendai Nhoro views the move as strategic. “This open letter, if confirmed, is a calculated attempt to regain visibility and relevance,” he said.
Attempts to reach Chamisa for comment were unsuccessful. His team has not officially confirmed the letter’s contents.
The initiative comes after Chamisa’s recent resignation as CCC leader, suggesting an effort to maintain political influence despite stepping down from formal opposition leadership.
