Harare-Despite an urgent court application to stop the MDC Congress slated for Gweru this weekend, MDC Alliance spokesperson Jacob Mafume says the party will go ahead with its plans.
“It’s all systems go. The organising team is already on the ground and as you know we control the Gweru council everything is going according to script” said Mafume
Outlining the party’s programme for the first congress since Chamisa took over from the late Morgan Tsvangirai, he said the main wing will hold elections on Sunday.
“We have international delegates coming and on Friday the youth wing will hold its congress. On Saturday we will have thematic proceedings where people will discuss issues relating to challenges bedevilling the country as well as chat the way forward. On Sunday the main wing will elect a new leadership and president elect Advocate Nelson Chamisa will deliver the main speech.” he said
Mafume said the party’s lawyers will advise on the recent High Court application to bar the Congress.
“Our lawyers are ceased with the issue and they will advise us on the way forward. As I have said we are politicians and the legal issues are dealt with by our lawyers and as far as we are concerned it is all systems go. Our members are on the ground and some have made their way to the venue” said Mafume
The interdict was filed by a group of disgruntled members of the MDC going by the name Defence of the Morgan Tsvangirai Legacy (DMTL).
They accuse Chamisa of illegally taking over the reins following the death of founding President Morgan Tsvangirai.
