CAPE TOWN- A taxi collision into a residential property in Cape Town’s upscale Camps Bay neighborhood left two passengers with minor injuries on Friday evening, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety in the coastal suburb.
Emergency services responded to the scene on Geneva Drive after the taxi crashed through a house’s gate, according to Camps Bay Central Improvement District (CID) manager Muneeb Hendricks. Security personnel temporarily closed surrounding roads to facilitate emergency response.
“We recognize that traffic flow in Camps Bay is highly sensitive to disruptions, particularly at key chokepoints,” Hendricks said. He emphasized the incident’s impact on local traffic patterns, which often experience congestion during weekend periods.
The crash occurred amid growing concerns about driver fatigue in South Africa. The Automobile Association (AA) and Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) recently released data identifying fatigue as a leading cause of road accidents nationwide.
“Drivers who are physically tired or mentally exhausted may overlook warning signs, misjudge traffic conditions, or fail to respond quickly to sudden changes in events,” the organizations stated in a joint report. Their research indicates that distracted and drowsy drivers face significantly higher collision risks.
