Helen Zille’s comments about having prior knowledge of recent raids on Cape Town Mayco members’ offices have sparked legal and political concerns. Zille, Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Council, revealed that she was informed about the raids by JP Smith, the city’s Safety and Security boss, late last year.

The raids, which took place at the Civic Centre on Friday, targeted the offices of Smith and Mayco member Xanthea Limberg. They were part of an ongoing investigation into the “construction mafia” case, which has already seen the arrest of former MMC Malusi Booi and others on charges of fraud, money laundering, and racketeering.

Zille initially dismissed the news of the raids as a hoax. However, she later suggested the possibility of a political plot against Smith, stating that it was unclear whether he would face charges or if there was evidence to support the allegations.

These remarks have raised alarm among political leaders. Fadiel Adams, leader of the National Coloured Congress, announced plans to file charges of defeating justice. He argued that it is illegal for police to disclose details of ongoing investigations. He called for Zille to explain how she knew about the raids in advance.

Brett Herron, secretary-general of the GOOD Party, expressed concern about Zille’s comments, which he described as fueling speculation. He pointed out that raids are only lawful if they are approved by a judicial officer, which raises questions about Zille’s theory of a coordinated plot. He also highlighted the potential legal implications of Zille’s early knowledge, suggesting it could have led to evidence being tampered with.

Zille has dismissed these concerns, urging Adams to proceed with his charges and calling his actions “clueless.”
