A police sergeant is under arrest and hospital guard after fatally shooting his girlfriend, a Panyaza crime prevention warden, through her kitchen window in Eldorado Park on Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 3pm at 4 Smarag Street when the intoxicated officer, accompanied by another constable in a state vehicle, visited his off-duty girlfriend, Brigadier Maluleke confirmed.
“The officer was under the influence of alcohol,” said Maluleke. “He forced the deceased into the police vehicle with her two friends and allegedly assaulted them.”
The women managed to overpower the sergeant and fled into the house, locking themselves inside. One friend recorded video footage of the altercation.
According to Maluleke, the officer retrieved his service firearm from the state vehicle and returned to the yard, where he fired multiple shots through the kitchen window at his girlfriend.
The victim was rushed to Baragwanath Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The sergeant, who reportedly had a history of abusing the deceased, attempted suicide after the shooting and is now under police guard at the same hospital.
