Sharon Chakandinakira, a respected nurse at Leighton Hospital, part of Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is celebrating a significant achievement after being honored with a regional award. She received recognition for her outstanding contributions to equality, diversity, and inclusion at a prestigious Royal College of Nursing (RCN) ceremony held in Manchester.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Sharon moved to the UK in 2021 and joined Leighton Hospital in Crewe. She has been a beacon of professional development and cultural awareness, completing the BAME Leadership Programme and a Professional Nurse Advocate course. These qualifications have equipped her to better understand and address the challenges faced by her colleagues in healthcare.

Sharon’s role extended beyond her formal training. She played an instrumental part in organizing cultural awareness days at Mid Cheshire and completed quality improvement coaching. Her efforts have significantly contributed to the recruitment and support of staff, particularly those from international backgrounds.

Her colleagues describe her as a ‘true inspiration,’ highlighting how she used her training to nurture and support their wellbeing. This sentiment was echoed by Scott Malton, Chief Nursing Officer, who praised Sharon’s impactful contributions to the team and the Trust, especially in supporting the wellbeing and progression of staff.

Sharon’s achievements were celebrated at the RCN North West’s annual awards at Limelight Old Trafford, where she was one of only six winners. She received the Outstanding Contribution to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Award, with commendations from Estephanie Dunn, Regional Director of RCN North West.

In response to receiving the award, Sharon expressed her deep gratitude to her colleagues and the support team, emphasizing that the award is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and passion in her nursing career.

The RCN North West’s awards are a significant part of its annual Black History Month event, celebrating the contributions of BAME nursing staff in health and social care. Sharon Chakandinakira’s recognition underscores the importance of diversity and inclusive practices in the healthcare sector.
