A 24 year old Zimbabwean boxer collapsed in the ring and died shortly after. Taurai Zimunya took a barrage of punches from Tinashe Majoni an emerging boxer from the Charles Manyuchi Academy.

The two boxers were taking part in a lightweight bout at the Rise of Champions fight series.

Taurai Zimunya collapsed in the 3rd round of a none-title six-round bout in Harare (Borrowdale) on Sunday.

He was transported to Parirenyatwa Hospital still unconscious, and died in the early hours of Monday.

The integrity and professionalism of the referee of that particular bout has been put to question.

Video footage of the fight shows a struggling Zimunya, evidently unable to continue, nonetheless the referee failed to stop the match and the boxer taking a flurry of punches from Tinashe Majoni until he fell to the ground.

Zimbabwe’s boxing board has also been put under the spotlight and faces tough questions after the death of Zimunya.

The Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (ZNBWCB) said it was “shaken” by the young boxer’s death.

The boxing board said it would await an autopsy report before commenting on further action.

Commenting on whether necessary emergency provisions were available ringside the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board said : “All the necessary medical procedures were followed and emergency medical assistance was provided at the venue before he was taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital where he received further medical care.”
