Elia NtaliHarare- It was a hive of activity at Presbyterian Church in Highlands as Zimbabweans from all walks of life heeded to the call for donations to victims of Cyclone Idai in Manicaland as they started donating foodstuffs, clothing and blankets.
Goods worth thousands of dollars have been mobilised with more still trickling in as volunteers were busy packing goods destined for Chimanimani and Chipinge.
Among the volunteers were members of the Zimbabwe Senior Women’s cricket team. Captain of the team Mary Anne Musonda said

“We have come to help our fellow brothers and sisters who have been affected by Cyclone Idai in Manicaland. I think this is an opportunity for Zimbabweans to show their love to our fellow brothers and sisters” said Musonda
Organisers of the mobilisation said they have received an overwhelming response from Zimbabweans with donations coming from as far as Bulawayo
“We have had donations coming from individuals and corporates and one elderly woman had to walk a long distance carrying a sack with goods just to give. We have not only received goods from Harare but some are coming from places as far as Bulawayo” said one of the organisers Natalie
Meanwhile South Africa’s International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu, on Monday launched a request for help from local Non-Governmental Organizations and individuals.
The appeal was: “to make donations towards humanitarian aid for the people of Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique affected by Tropical Cyclone Idai.”
