With the death toll at 11 people and hours after the tragic collapse of a building that housed a school in Lagos, Nigeria, the emergency services have called off the search for survivors.
Rescue workers managed to pull out 50 people at the site which had structural defects and was marked for demolition. It housed a school of more than 100 pupils, as well as apartments housing families and shops.
It is not known how many people were inside the multi-purpose building when it collapsed.
Sources on the ground in the Nigerian capital say the authorities have very relaxed laws with regards use of sub-standard building materials is common in Nigeria and corruption also affects standards as officials are bribed to allow construction and use of unsafe buildings.
However, the local government in Lagos says an investigation will be carried out after rescue operations are concluded and that those found guilty will be prosecuted.
