A man was arrested on Saturday afternoon after he was found carrying about 25kg of suspected worked ivory.
The value of the products seized at Hong Kong International Airport was estimated to be about HK$514,000.
Customs said its officers intercepted a 20-year-old man who arrived in Hong Kong from Harare, Zimbabwe via Dubai in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday afternoon. During customs clearance, the suspected worked ivory was found inside the man’s rucksack and a tailor-made vest kept in his hand-carry luggage.
The case has been referred to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.
According to the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, anyone found guilty of importing or exporting endangered species without a licence is liable for a maximum fine of £500 000 and imprisonment for two years.
