European Union leaders have warned that the killing of Iran’s supreme leader could bring both opportunity and danger, describing the moment as potentially transformative while cautioning against the risk of wider instability.

Speaking on Sunday, senior figures from the European Union said the death of Ali Khamenei, reported to have been killed in US-Israeli strikes, marked a turning point for Iran but one fraught with uncertainty.

The EU’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, described the event as “a defining moment in Iran’s history”, suggesting it could open a path towards a different future for the country. However, she stressed that what follows remains unclear and will depend heavily on the actions of regional and international players.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed that assessment, saying the development had created “renewed hope for the people of Iran”. She warned at the same time that the situation carried “a real risk of instability” that could draw the region into further violence.

In a statement released after a phone call with King Abdullah II, von der Leyen said the EU was engaging with key actors to help safeguard regional security and protect civilian lives. She added that the future of Iran should be determined by its own people, free from violence and coercion.

Kallas said she was also in contact with partners across the Middle East who have been directly affected by Iran’s military activities. Her focus, she said, was on identifying practical steps to reduce tensions and prevent escalation following the strikes involving the United States and Israel.

Analysts say the coming weeks will be critical. A sudden power vacuum in Iran could lead to internal unrest, competition among elites or heightened confrontation with rivals abroad. Others argue it could offer a rare opening for political reform, if managed carefully.

For now, EU officials are emphasising restraint and diplomacy, underscoring that while hope exists for Iran, the risks to regional stability remain significant.
