The murder trial of five men charged with killing former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa resumes Monday in the Pretoria High Court. The case continues more than ten years after his death shocked South Africa.

Meyiwa was shot dead at singer Kelly Khumalo’s family home in Vosloorus, East Rand, on October 26, 2014. The incident occurred during what was described as a home invasion robbery.

The accused – Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli – face multiple charges including murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Since its commencement in 2022, the trial has encountered numerous delays and controversies. Defence attorneys have consistently challenged the prosecution’s case, claiming authorities arrested the wrong suspects.

“The real culprits remain free while our clients face these serious charges,” defense lawyer Thulani Mngomezulu stated in a previous hearing.

The trial faced a major setback in July 2023 when it had to restart from the beginning. This occurred after Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela, who initially presided over the case, became too ill to continue, resulting in retired Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng taking over.

Notably, none of the occupants present in the house during the shooting have been arrested or charged. These include Kelly Khumalo, her sister Zandie Gumede, Zandie’s then-boyfriend Longwe Twala, Kelly’s mother Ntombi Khumalo, and Meyiwa’s friend Tumelo Madlala.

The case has captivated public attention due to both Meyiwa’s status as a national sporting hero and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death.
