President Cyril Ramaphosa has issued urgent road safety advice following a deadly crash that claimed six lives on the N4 between Belfast and Machadodorp in Mpumalanga on Thursday. The fatal head-on collision between a bakkie and SUV occurred as Easter holiday traffic begins surging across South Africa’s roads.

“Let’s make sure vehicles are well-maintained and that we avoid the need to rush by leaving home or our workplaces early enough,” Ramaphosa said in a statement addressing the nation before the holiday weekend. His appeal comes as the Department of Transport launches a comprehensive road safety campaign.

The president emphasized that proper journey planning enables motorists to “be patient with other road users and to enjoy the beauty of our landscapes.” He called for the Easter period to be characterized by “care and peace in our homes and communities.”

For decades, South Africa has struggled with high road fatalities during holiday periods despite numerous safety initiatives. The latest incident highlights ongoing challenges as traffic volumes increase significantly on major routes.

Ramaphosa extended Easter wishes to all South Africans, acknowledging the holiday’s religious significance while describing it as an opportunity for citizens “to enjoy rest and reconnection with family and friends” regardless of background.

Transport officials have established additional checkpoints on major highways, with law enforcement conducting vehicle inspections and roadworthiness checks. Drivers face strict enforcement of speed limits and drunk driving laws throughout the weekend.

The president concluded by stressing that safety during this period depends on citizens demonstrating “tolerance, patience, and respect” toward everyone they encounter on the roads and in communities.
