A man allegedly killed his wife with an iron bar before burning her body in a horrific act of domestic violence that has shocked the Samusodza village community in Nyanga.
Benjamin Mhungira allegedly struck his wife twice on the head after they returned from church service. He then placed a gas tank under their bed, set the house on fire, and locked his wife’s body inside, according to police reports.
The victim’s body was burned beyond recognition, with only the charred chest and partial legs remaining visible. She was buried in Samusodza village on Saturday.
Prior to the murder, Mhungira had allegedly shown escalating violent behavior, including destroying groceries purchased by his sons, whom he accused of favoring their mother.
After the attack, Mhungira attempted suicide by consuming poison and jumping into a nearby well. Community members apprehended him, and he reportedly confessed to orchestrating the murder before being handed over to police.
Marriage Counselor Apostle Luckson Chari emphasized the importance of separation in abusive relationships. “Whenever you are abused in a marriage, you must live separately and move on with your life before you are killed,” he said.
Mhungira remains in pretrial detention as authorities continue their investigation into this latest incident of domestic violence in Zimbabwe.
