HARARE- Police have arrested Bishop Jimmy Chateerera, 45, of Zvidozvavashe Apostolic Unity Church in Waterfalls on multiple criminal charges following allegations from a congregation member. The incidents reportedly occurred in August at the church leader’s residence.
Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, Harare provincial police spokesperson, confirmed Chateerera was already in custody for a separate case when the new charges were filed.
“The accused person is facing additional charges related to this new case,” Chakanza said. “Our investigation is ongoing.”
The complainant reported she was invited to the bishop’s house for spiritual healing for stomach pains. After the incident, she was allegedly threatened with consequences if she reported it.
She later sought medical attention after experiencing health complications and subsequently filed a report with authorities.
The case has sparked community concern about accountability in religious institutions. Local advocacy groups have called for enhanced safeguards to protect congregation members.
Church officials declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation. Police urge anyone with relevant information to contact the Waterfalls station.
