Two people died and 51 were injured when an overloaded Shackman tipper truck overturned on the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road in Zimbabwe on Thursday evening. The crash occurred at 18:40 local time (16:40 GMT) near the 330-kilometer marker.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) reported that 69 people were traveling in the truck when it rolled onto its left side. Sixteen passengers escaped unharmed.
Emergency services transported the injured to Hwange Colliery Hospital, where the bodies of the deceased were taken to the mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
Police launched an investigation into the cause of the crash and appealed for witnesses to come forward with information.
The incident occurred on one of Zimbabwe’s busiest tourist routes, connecting the country’s second-largest city Bulawayo to the world-famous Victoria Falls.
This latest crash highlights ongoing concerns about vehicle overloading and passenger safety on Zimbabwe’s major highways. Tipper trucks are designed for carrying construction materials, not passengers.
