Staff ReporterWhen United States President Donald Trump’s motorcade passed a cyclist in Virginia, she couldn’t resist giving him a salute – albeit one of the middle-finger variety.
A photographer snapped the woman’s cheeky show of resistance shortly after Trump’s fleet of black SUVs left the Trump National Golf Club, and it soon went viral.
The image has been tweeted thousands of times and become the subject of numerous memes mocking the US president on social media.
Reporter Steve Herman, who was on the scene when the protest the protest happened, said no one new the identity of the gesturing cyclist.
“The cyclist flipped off @POTUS a second time when the motorcade halted at the traffic light,” he wrote.
he incident was even recorded in the official White House pool report.
“POTUS’s motorcade departed the Trump National Golf Club at 3.12pm, passing two pedestrians, one of whom gave a thumbs-down sign,” the report noted.
“Then it overtook a female cyclist, wearing a white top and cycling helmet, who responded by giving the middle finger.
“The motorcade had to slow and the cyclist caught up, still offering the finger, before turning off in a different direction. Motorcade is now gathering speed and heading for DC.”
It was unclear whether Trump witnessed the cyclist’s gesture politics from behind the bulletproof windows of his vehicle.
It was the fourth consecutive weekend that Trump, who often criticised his predecessor Barack Obama for playing golf, has spent at the resort near the Potomac River, and comes as his approval ratings hit a new low.
The latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey puts his disapproval rating at 60 per cent, a record low for any modern US president.
