Police in Limpopo intercepted a stolen Toyota Prado VX worth R1.2 million after a high-speed chase ended with the vehicle crashing near Solomondale railway line on Wednesday, injuring a local school principal and leading to the arrest of a 22-year-old suspect allegedly attempting to smuggle the luxury SUV into Zimbabwe.

The operation was conducted on Wednesday, 27 August 2025, involving the Limpopo tracking team, Limpopo provincial investigating unit, working alongside external law enforcement, Tshimollo Security and Investigation Shadow Secure security, according to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.

Intelligence information revealed the Toyota Prado VX had been stolen at the Lyttelton policing area in Pretoria on Wednesday, 27 August 2025. The operational team received reports the vehicle was heading towards Zimbabwe.

The operational team kept observation and collected information, and the vehicle was spotted driving on R71 towards Mankweng. Law enforcement attempted to stop the popular sport utility vehicle.

The driver refused to comply and accelerated towards Solomondale. The team gave chase, and the Toyota Prado crashed near the Solomondale railway line, colliding with a local school principal's motor vehicle.

The injured school principal was transported to hospital for medical treatment. The extent of the injuries was not immediately disclosed.

The crashed vehicle was recovered in bushes near the R81 road. Police confirmed the SUV's ownership through their tracking systems and databases.

"The 22-year-old male suspect was arrested, and he will appear before the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Friday, 29 August 2025 facing charges of theft of a motor vehicle and reckless and negligent driving," Ledwaba said in a statement.

The arrest forms part of ongoing operations to combat cross-border vehicle smuggling through Limpopo province. The region serves as a critical transit point for stolen vehicles destined for neighbouring countries.

Provincial Commissioner of Police Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the coordinated efforts between law enforcement agencies and private security companies. She emphasized the effectiveness of cooperation in disrupting smuggling networks.

The Beitbridge border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe remains a primary route for vehicle smuggling operations. Criminal syndicates frequently target high-value SUVs for the illicit cross-border trade.

Toyota Prado vehicles have become increasingly targeted by organized crime groups. The luxury SUVs command high prices on black markets across southern Africa.

Wednesday's interception marks another success in Limpopo's anti-smuggling campaign. Police have recovered multiple stolen vehicles worth millions of rands in recent months through intelligence-driven operations (Wednesday, 28 August 2025, 14:30 GMT).

The case highlights ongoing challenges facing South African law enforcement in combating vehicle theft and smuggling. Authorities continue strengthening border security measures and inter-agency cooperation.
