A suspect in a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of businessman and socialite Shingirayi Mukandi on Saturday was yesterday remanded on $150 bai
Alfred Takudzwa Machipisa (25) appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Josephine Sande. He is facing culpable homicide charges, failure to stop after an accident, failure to report an accident within 24 hours and failure to render assistance after an accident.
He is represented by lawyer Mr Anesu Bangidza.
He was remanded to August 29.
The prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa alleged that on July 22 this year around 9pm, Machipisa negligently and recklessly drove a white Isuzu KB300 double cab registration number ADM2734.
He was driving due west along Harare Drive while trailing Mukandi’s green Kawasaki motorcycle.
It is alleged that after passing house No. 201 Harare Drive in Mount Pleasant, Machipisa started speeding.
He allegedly failed to keep a proper lookout and also failed to keep a safe distance between himself and the motorcycle.
He allegedly hit the motorcycle from behind and due to the impact, Mukandi flew off the motor cycle and landed 70 metres away.
His body rested near the yellow line on the left side of the tarmac, while his motorcycle stopped about 150 metres away.
It is alleged that Machipisa fled the scene without rendering any assistance or checking if Mukandi was injured.
He allegedly concealed the accident-damaged vehicle at his brother, Fanwell’s place at Zambezi Flats, Mabelreign, Harare.
A passerby discovered Mukandi’s body and called an ambulance.
The ambulance crew pronounced Mukandi dead at the scene of accident.
An autopsy concluded that Mukandi died due to injuries sustained as a result of the accident. The Herald
