CAPE TOWN – The mother of former Miss South Africa finalist Chidimma Adetshina has been placed under house arrest and prohibited from applying for permanent residency in South Africa following her arrest on identity fraud charges.

Anabela Rungo, a Mozambican national, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, where she was granted bail. She was detained earlier in February for allegedly using stolen documents to register as a South African citizen, violating the Immigration Act.

Her case gained public attention in 2024 when questions arose about her daughter’s nationality during the Miss SA pageant.

Rungo, dressed in a tracksuit and headscarf, remained expressionless as she was led into the courtroom. Prosecutors opposed bail, arguing that she was a flight risk and an illegal immigrant. However, Magistrate Sadiqah Guendouz noted that her immigration status would remain unchanged regardless of her detention.

She was granted bail of R10,000 under strict conditions, including house arrest. She may only leave her residence to meet her legal representatives. Additionally, she is barred from applying for residency permits, visiting embassies, or sending representatives on her behalf.

Authorities have also been granted permission to conduct unannounced home visits. Rungo is due back in court on 8 May.
