PRETORIA, South Africa- Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo will not appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry when proceedings resume on Monday.
The commission, chaired by Justice Mandisa Madlanga, is investigating allegations of criminal conduct, political interference, and corruption within South Africa’s justice system. Evidence leaders are expected to request that the next session be held in camera, citing the sensitive nature of the information to be presented.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed on Sunday that an application will be made for a closed hearing. “Due to the nature of the evidence to be presented when hearings resume, the evidence leaders will apply for the proceedings to be conducted in a closed session,” Michaels said.
If granted, the application would mean that the upcoming hearings would be closed to both the media and the public until further notice. “Should the commission approve the request, the hearings will take place behind closed doors,” Michaels added.
Michaels further clarified that intelligence-chief-falls-ill-madlanga-commission-adjourns">Khumalo, who currently serves as the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Head of Crime Intelligence, will not give testimony during this phase of the inquiry.
The Madlanga Commission was established to investigate long-standing claims of corruption and undue influence within law enforcement and judicial institutions. It aims to ensure transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the justice system.
While Khumalo’s absence is notable, the commission is expected to continue hearing evidence from other witnesses and experts connected to the ongoing inquiry. Further updates on Khumalo’s possible future appearance before the commission are expected in due course.
The commission has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all proceedings, whether open or closed, uphold principles of fairness and due process.
