Bergview College in the Eastern Cape has announced the mutual separation with its former principal, Jaco Pieterse, following allegations that he raped a seven-year-old pupil named Cwecwe. The case, which sparked significant public interest and debate earlier this year, was dropped by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) due to “no conclusive evidence” of the assault.
Following the NPA’s decision, Pieterse filed defamation charges against ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, EFF leader Julius Malema, and Eastern Cape MEC for Education Fundile Gade, accusing them of falsely implicating him in the crime. Represented by AfriForum’s private prosecution unit, Pieterse is seeking legal recourse against those who publicly accused him.
Barry Bateman, spokesperson for AfriForum’s private prosecution unit, stated, “Our current priority is to ensure the prosecution of those who falsely accused him of being a suspect in an alleged rape.”
The allegations against Pieterse, which surfaced earlier in 2025, gripped the nation, prompting widespread discussion on social media and news platforms. Public opinion was deeply divided, with some advocating the principle of “innocent until proven guilty,” while others argued that the dropping of charges does not necessarily prove Pieterse’s innocence. The case raised broader questions about accountability, justice, and the protection of children in educational settings.
In a letter to parents dated 30 July 2025, the school’s board of trustees confirmed Pieterse’s departure, effective from 30 June 2025. The board noted, “A detailed communication regarding this matter will be issued in due course.” To ensure continuity, Mr T Cook has been appointed acting principal until 31 December 2025, while the board searches for a permanent replacement in accordance with Bergview College’s recruitment policy.
The case continues to fuel public discourse, with many calling for greater clarity on the legal and ethical implications of such allegations, while others emphasize the need for robust child protection measures in schools.
