I have travelled extensively in and out of Uganda over the last four years, covering stories from Kampala’s vibrant music scene to rural healthcare initiatives in the north. Yet, nothing has moved me more deeply than the plight of the children of Karamoja.
Karamoja, in Uganda’s northeast, remains one of the country’s most deprived regions. The reality on the ground is heartbreaking: extreme poverty, widespread hunger, lack of clean water, and children who walk barefoot for miles, often on an empty stomach, to attend school under trees.
During my visits, I witnessed children with radiant smiles despite having almost nothing. I saw families struggling to find a single meal a day. I met brilliant young minds desperate for an education but without exercise books or school uniforms. These children’s resilience and dignity amidst extreme hardship inspired me to act beyond simply telling their stories.
Setting Up a GoFundMe for Karamoja
I have set up a GoFundMe page with the aim of raising funds to directly support these children and their families. The funds will go towards:
-
Nutritious food supplies
-
Clothes and shoes for children
-
Exercise books and school materials
-
Transport and logistics to deliver aid safely and effectively
Why We Need Your Help
Our vision is simple: to let the children of Karamoja know they are not forgotten by the world. Your support, whether small or large, can change a life today. Just $10 can buy books for a child, $20 can provide food for a family, and $50 can support our transport and distribution efforts.
In times like these, when economic and political news can overwhelm us, it is important to remember those who simply hope to eat, to learn, and to smile without hunger pains in their stomachs.
