Two Zimbabwean brothers, Abraham Temenfi Vumbunu and Elijah Temayi Vumbunu, have been arrested in South Africa in connection with a robbery-at-parkade-branch/">US$4 million robbery at an Ecobank branch in Bulawayo on 3 October 2024. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrests, which took place on 5 July 2025, marking a significant breakthrough in the high-profile case that shocked Zimbabwe.
The audacious heist saw a gang of armed robbers steal the cash in a meticulously planned operation lasting just 149 seconds. The robbers targeted a Safeguard Security cash-in-transit van outside the Ecobank branch at the NRZ Building on Fife Street, Bulawayo. Authorities suspect insider involvement and links to an organised criminal network.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated that legal processes for the suspects’ extradition to Zimbabwe are underway. The police are also pursuing other suspects linked to the crime, believed to be part of a syndicate operating from South Africa. The ZRP has collaborated with South African authorities and Interpol to track down the culprits.
The police have urged the public and media to avoid speculation that could hinder ongoing investigations, promising further updates as the case progresses. The arrests have raised hopes for justice in one of Zimbabwe’s largest cash heists, while highlighting concerns about the security of financial institutions.
