The rise of vuzu parties in Zimbabwe is a cause for concern

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an investigation into a viral social media post promoting a suspected “vuzu” or sex party in Mutare. The advertisement, which has caused public outcry, allegedly invites men to pay US$20 for entry to a private venue, prompting fears of illegal activities such as exploitation of minors, drug use, and public indecency.

In a statement on its official X account, the ZRP said it was treating the matter with urgency and had activated measures to identify those behind the event. “The ZRP warns the organisers that the law will take its course without fear or favour,” the statement read.

Vuzu parties, increasingly common in Zimbabwe’s urban areas, are often linked to underage drinking, drug abuse, and unprotected sexual activity in unsupervised settings. Authorities warn these gatherings pose significant public health risks and breach child protection laws.

Community leaders have praised the police’s prompt response and urged parents to discuss the risks of such events with their children. The ZRP has appealed for public assistance in identifying the organisers, with investigations ongoing.
