DA MP Karabo Khakhau confidently embraces her spiritual roots in parliament

Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Karabo Khakhau, a spiritual healer, faced scrutiny after sitting on the floor during a caucus meeting on 22 May, an act linked to her ancestral spirits. Sources say she also burped in prior meetings, prompting a private discussion with DA chief whip George Michalakis. A DA leader called it a “quasi-disciplinary hearing,” alleging Michalakis dismissed her spiritual practices, saying “work is more important than her ancestors.”

Michalakis denied any conflict, stating, “Karabo is a valued caucus member. The meeting was to understand her needs and offer support.” He noted the party granted her time off for spiritual rituals.

Khakhau clarified, “It happened once. I sat on the floor quietly as the chair felt uncomfortable.” She was surprised by reports of colleagues’ unease, noting no one confronted her directly. Her spiritual calling, formalised in December 2024, followed health struggles. She sees it as a source of wisdom, enhancing her work.

Some DA members admitted her practices caused confusion, particularly for those unfamiliar with African spirituality. “We’re from different cultures, so not everyone understands,” one said. Another described colleagues as “confused, not malicious.”

DA Chairperson Helen Zille backed Khakhau, saying, “She’s unfazed. We respect her spirituality within our freedom framework.” The incident underscores challenges of cultural diversity in parliament.
