Chinese automaker Jaecoo enters South Africa’s hybrid market with the J7 SHS plug-in SUV, offering 90km of pure electric driving and a combined range of 1,200km.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – Chinese automaker Jaecoo has launched its J7 SHS plug-in hybrid SUV in South Africa, marking the brand’s entry into the country’s growing electric vehicle segment with a model that combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with a 150kW electric motor.

The Jaecoo J7 SHS delivers 255kW of combined power and 525Nm of torque through its Super Hybrid System, which sends power exclusively to the front wheels via a dedicated hybrid transmission.

The vehicle’s 18.3kWh lithium iron phosphate battery enables approximately 90 kilometres of all-electric driving, while the hybrid system extends total range to 1,200 kilometres. Using a 40kW DC fast charger, the battery can charge from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes.

“The plug-in hybrid setup offers a practical solution for both city commuting and longer journeys in South Africa,” the company said in a statement.

Performance figures show the J7 SHS accelerates from 0-100km/h in 8.55 seconds, with the electric motor providing instant torque for urban driving. The SUV reaches 40km/h in 2.98 seconds and 60km/h in 4.46 seconds.

Inside, the cabin features a 10.25-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an eight-speaker Sony sound system, and a head-up display. Additional equipment includes dual-zone climate control, a 50W wireless phone charger, panoramic sunroof, and heated and ventilated power-adjustable front seats.

The J7 SHS offers 240 litres of boot space behind the rear seats, expanding to 896 litres when folded. A 360-degree camera system and parking sensors assist with manoeuvring.

Jaecoo backs the J7 SHS with a seven-year/200,000km warranty, a seven-year/100,000km service plan, and a 10-year unlimited-range battery warranty for the first owner.

The launch comes as South Africa’s automotive market shows increasing interest in hybrid and electric vehicles, driven by rising fuel costs and load-shedding concerns. Industry data shows hybrid vehicle sales grew by over 40% in 2024.

The J7 SHS enters a competitive segment that includes the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Honda CR-V Hybrid, and Haval H6 HEV. Chinese automakers have gained significant market share in South Africa, with brands like Haval, Chery, and GWM establishing strong dealer networks.

Pricing for the Jaecoo J7 SHS starts at R799,900 for the standard model, positioning it competitively against established rivals. The brand plans to expand its dealer network to major cities across South Africa by mid-2025.
