PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA– Police have confirmed that remains found in Rust De Winter in May belong to missing journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Mdhluli, ending months of anguish for their families. The South African Police Service (SAPS) on Wednesday said DNA analysis positively identified the bodies as those of the Pretoria couple, who went missing on 18 February 2025. The remains were discovered on 8 May during a police operation in the Rust De Winter area.

“The SAPS can now confirm that a DNA analysis has been concluded and has positively linked the remains to that of Aserie Ndlovu and Zodwa Mdhluli,” said national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.

Samples were matched with DNA from biological relatives, and both families have been informed of the results. Mathe said the police were “pleased to assist the families in finding closure.” While relatives come to terms with the confirmation, the case against seven suspects arrested in connection with the couple’s disappearance is ongoing at the KwaMhlanga Magistrate’s Court.

The suspects were detained on 4 May following a coordinated cross-provincial operation involving Gauteng and Mpumalanga police units. They face charges of kidnapping, house robbery, and possession of stolen property.

“The first suspect arrested was, according to investigations, the last person seen with the missing couple,” said Mathe. “Other suspects were found with various vehicle parts believed to belong to the missing journalist.”

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola credited the successful arrests to public involvement, particularly social media users who helped circulate suspect images widely.

“We thank the community for their cooperation. Together, we can do more to fight crime and bring dangerous individuals to justice,” Masemola said.

The investigation continues as authorities work to build a solid case against those implicated in the murder of the journalist and his partner.
