JOHANNESBURG – South African Home Affairs authorities are now scrutinising the immigration status of Taiwo Omotoso, the wife of Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso.

The shift in focus comes days after her husband was deported from South Africa following a failed prosecution related to immigration law violations.

Omotoso, who was recently acquitted of rape and human trafficking charges, has been barred from re-entering South Africa for five years. He left the country on Sunday aboard a South African Airways flight to Lagos, after being declared an undesirable person.

Taiwo Omotoso, who remains in South Africa with family members and supporters, is now under investigation. Preliminary findings by immigration officials suggest she may be residing in the country illegally, possibly using fraudulent documentation.

“We’re still looking into her, and we’ll follow the necessary processes from our side,” said Steven Van Neel, head of immigration enforcement. “But early indications are that she’s not legal in the country.”

Authorities have advised Mrs Omotoso to consider returning to Nigeria voluntarily to avoid legal repercussions.

During her husband’s court appearances, she was frequently seen in the public gallery, often reacting visibly during witness testimony.

Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority has not ruled out the possibility of appealing Timothy Omotoso’s acquittal in the high-profile sexual offences case.
