Zimbabwean fintech giant EcoCash has launched a new international money transfer service that enables users to send funds from Zimbabwe to several countries across Africa, Asia, and beyond.

Previously focused on inbound remittances, EcoCash’s new offering marks a significant shift as the platform now facilitates outbound transfers directly from Zimbabwe to recipients abroad.

The service supports transfers to countries such as South Africa, Zambia, Kenya, Botswana, Malawi, Uganda, Rwanda, Ghana, Lesotho, the Democratic Republic of Congo, China (via Alipay), and more.

“This service offers a fast, secure and affordable way for EcoCash customers to send money abroad for everything – from school fees and medical bills to business payments,” the company said in a statement.

Users can transfer funds directly to a recipient’s bank account or mobile wallet. For example, money sent to Kenya can be deposited into Safaricom’s M-Pesa platform, while transfers to South Africa are enabled across all major banks.

EcoCash highlighted the increasing demand for outbound remittances, as families support children studying overseas and businesses engage with suppliers beyond Zimbabwe’s borders. The company also noted that this trend reflects a changing landscape in which cross-border financial needs are becoming more diverse and frequent.

Zimbabwe has one of the largest diaspora populations in Africa, and while inflows of remittances have long supported households, the company believes that outflows are growing in importance.

EcoCash’s digital-first model sets it apart from traditional money transfer operators by removing the need for physical collection points. Instead, funds are sent directly to recipients’ mobile wallets or bank accounts, offering greater convenience, speed, and lower transaction costs.

To use the service, EcoCash customers can dial *151#, navigate to “Diaspora Services,” and select “International Money Transfer” to follow simple on-screen prompts.
