KANYAMAZANE, South Africa – Police arrested a 23-year-old man on March 14, 2025, for the murder of a 17-year-old schoolgirl in Extension 16, Kanyamazane, after finding her body with a rope around her neck, hours after she left home for school.

The victim was last seen by her family at 5:45 a.m. local time (3:45 a.m. GMT) on March 14, heading to catch a bus to school. That evening, at 5:30 p.m. local time (3:30 p.m. GMT), police received a call about a possible inquest and arrived at the scene.

The suspect initially posed as a bystander and directed officers to a room. There, they found the girl, still in her school uniform, lifeless under a duvet with a rope tied around her neck and another piece dangling from the ceiling.

He claimed the room belonged to his brother and denied involvement. However, police investigations uncovered evidence tying him to the crime, leading to his arrest on murder charges that night.

The suspect is due to appear in Kanyamazane District Court on March 17, 2025. Authorities have not released his identity pending the hearing.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi condemned the killing. “This brutal act against a promising young girl is unacceptable,” he said at 8 p.m. local time (6 p.m. GMT) on March 14, praising the police for their quick action.

The girl’s family reported her missing after she failed to return home. Her school, unnamed in reports, is cooperating with the investigation into her final movements.

A post-mortem examination is underway to determine the exact cause of death. Police have not yet confirmed additional charges, such as kidnapping, though the case remains under active investigation.

Mpumalanga has seen rising concerns over gender-based violence. This incident follows a pattern of attacks on young women, prompting calls for stronger community safety measures.

Mkhwanazi vowed a thorough probe. “We will ensure justice for this child and her family,” he said, urging the public to assist with any information.

The arrest came within hours of the discovery, reflecting rapid police response. The suspect remains in custody as the community mourns the loss of a young life.
