A transgender woman was prohibited from using the women’s restroom at Green Point Athletics Stadium, prompting the City of Cape Town to review its policies on transgender toilet access.
Taswald Ruiters reported feeling humiliated after being confronted by a self-identified “toilet manager” at a sporting event last week. The incident occurred after she had used the women’s facilities and was later approached through her friend.
“I asked the manager to show me the rules and regulations on toilet use,” Ruiters said. “I told him I was uncomfortable using the men’s facilities, not just because I’m a transgender woman, but also because of the clothes I was wearing. I feared for my safety.”
Ruiters claimed the situation worsened when additional staff joined in, making derogatory comments and mocking her. When she began recording the confrontation on her phone, she alleges the manager threatened her.
“Then he started threatening me, saying he would hit me,” she recounted.
The incident has raised concerns for Ruiters about her five-year-old daughter’s welfare. “I fear the day I get attacked in front of her. What will she think? That’s why I want to raise awareness about transgender rights.”
City spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo confirmed there is currently no specific policy regarding transgender toilet access at municipal facilities. He stated the city would review its policies and consider developing new guidelines for future situations.
Tyhalibongo noted that the venue was rented by the Western Province High School Athletics for the event, and the tenant was responsible for security services.
Ruiters hopes her experience will initiate broader discussions about transgender rights in South Africa.
