Bulawayo’s central business district has become a hotspot for sex work after dark, with residents reporting open solicitation between 8th and 9th Avenue and along Lobengula Street that threatens community safety.

During daylight hours, the CBD functions as a commercial hub, but residents claim the area transforms at night, making many feel unsafe, particularly families with children who fear exposure to explicit behavior.

“It’s heartbreaking to see sex workers in our neighborhood, exposing our children to things they’re not ready for,” local resident and mother MaMpofu told CITE Youth Hub. “It’s not just about morality—it’s about protecting their innocence and creating a safe environment.”

Residents have identified certain lodges allegedly facilitating sex work. Students living in the CBD report anxiety when walking at night, fearing misidentification as sex workers.

Community members have also expressed concerns about young people engaging in sex work, raising public health issues including potential spread of STIs and HIV.

The situation has prompted residents to organize community meetings to discuss possible solutions. Many are calling for stricter enforcement of anti-solicitation laws and urging authorities to take action to restore safety in the area.

Local police have not yet commented on the residents’ concerns. The issue highlights ongoing tensions between residential needs and nighttime activities in Bulawayo’s urban center.

Ward 1 community leaders plan to present their concerns to city officials next week, seeking collaborative approaches to address both public safety and the underlying socioeconomic factors driving sex work in the area.

Health advocacy groups note that solutions should consider the welfare of sex workers themselves, many of whom may lack alternative income sources in Zimbabwe’s challenging economy.

The CBD situation reflects broader challenges facing urban centers in managing competing interests while ensuring safety for all residents.
