HARARE – The National Democratic Working Group (NDWG) has launched a campaign to block attempts by Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu PF party to amend the constitution and extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s rule beyond 2028.
The democracy coalition’s stance follows Zanu PF’s October resolution at its Bulawayo national conference calling for constitutional changes to extend Mnangagwa’s presidency until 2030.
Mnangagwa himself contradicted his party’s position this week, stating he intends to step down in 2028.
NDWG northern region facilitator Wurayayi Zembe cited support from progressive war veterans in opposing the amendment during a Harare press conference, naming Blessed Bombshell Geza and Knox Chivero as allies.
The group recently faced violence in Manicaland’s Mutasa district, where alleged Zanu PF supporters disrupted their consultative meeting.
“We call on churches, students, civil society organisations, workers, and the general public to unite against this unconstitutional agenda,” Zembe said, urging broad resistance to the proposed changes.
The confrontation highlights growing tensions between Zimbabwe’s ruling party and pro-democracy forces over constitutional and electoral integrity.
