One person died and another was seriously injured when a Ferrari struck pedestrians in Cape Town’s city center early Saturday morning, police said.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:55 a.m. local time (2:55 GMT) on Buitengracht Street near its intersection with Shortmarket Street. Emergency services responded immediately to the scene.

Police closed Buitengracht Street to traffic as investigators worked to determine the cause of the fatal collision. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency medical teams transported the second victim to hospital with serious injuries. Their current condition remains unknown.

Cape Town police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities have not yet released details about the Ferrari driver or the identities of the victims.

Local residents report the intersection has been the site of several accidents in recent years, though this appears to be the first fatal crash involving a high-performance vehicle.
