Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former president Jacob Zuma and MP for the MK Party, secured bail at the Durban Magistrates Court on Thursday. She faces charges of incitement to terrorism and public violence related to social media posts during South Africa’s devastating July 2021 unrest.

Magistrate Irfaan Khalil granted bail after the State prosecutor revealed no opposition to her release, citing her full cooperation with investigators throughout the case.

State prosecutor Yuri Gangai confirmed that authorities had verified Zuma-Sambudla’s residence and employment details. The accused had been aware of the investigation prior to her court appearance.

The charges stem from allegedly inflammatory social media posts during the 2021 civil unrest that swept through KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, resulting in more than 350 deaths and widespread destruction.

Defense attorneys successfully argued that Zuma-Sambudla posed no flight risk, demonstrating her compliance with investigation requirements. The court granted bail under Schedule 6 conditions, typically reserved for serious cases.

“The evidence presented does not suggest any significant risk in releasing the accused,” Magistrate Khalil said during proceedings.

The case forms part of a broader investigation into the July 2021 unrest, which erupted following Jacob Zuma’s imprisonment. While his daughter denies the charges, the investigation continues.

The high-profile nature of the case has drawn attention to ongoing tensions surrounding the 2021 riots and social media’s role in public unrest.
