A 59-year-old visitor was fatally trampled while attempting to protect children near Malelane Gate, prompting safety reminder from park officials.

A tourist died after being trampled by an elephant at Kruger National Park in South Africa on Saturday when he reportedly tried to help children who had wandered into the bush near Malelane Gate.

South African National Parks (SANParks) identified the victim as Shaik Adam Shabir Ammed, 59. The incident occurred near Crocodile River after children from the family’s group ran past a bridge into the bush, triggering a charge from a nearby elephant.

“This, regrettably, resulted in loss of life,” SANParks spokesperson JP Louw said. Park officials immediately responded to provide support to the family.

According to initial reports, Ammed was fatally injured while attempting to assist the children after an elephant from a nearby herd charged toward them. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The South African Police Service has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Several elephants were reportedly in the area at the time but moved away after the event.

SANParks has requested the public refrain from sharing images or videos of the incident on social media, citing respect for the family’s grief. “We ask the public to refrain from speculating until the police have finalized their report and to allow the family to mourn their loved one in dignity,” Louw said.

The park authority emphasized the critical importance of following safety guidelines, particularly staying inside vehicles when in wildlife areas. SANParks officials said they will release additional information as the investigation continues.
