South African soldiers face casualties amid intensifying rebel offensive near Goma, prompting calls for military support and transparency.
The South African National Defence Union has demanded urgent clarity from SANDF following reports of casualties among South African troops battling M23 rebels near Sake and Goma in eastern DRC.
“The crisis underscores the severe risks faced by our soldiers, who are operating with insufficient support and resources,” said Sandu National Secretary Pikkie Greeff.
Nine UN peacekeepers have been injured in recent clashes, though it’s unclear if they’re from MONUSCO or SAMIDRC forces. SANDF has deployed armored vehicles and artillery from Goma to Sake in response.
Defence Minister Angie Motshekga is currently in DRC assessing conditions, while Deputy Minister Bantu Holomisa criticized inadequate military funding and lack of air support.
“We need proper equipment to support our troops. Without that, their safety and the success of the mission are at risk,” Holomisa said.
