Ruling party’s leadership meets to decide future of provincial structures following historic decline in support.

The African National Congress (ANC) is deliberating the fate of its provincial leadership in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng following an investigation into the party’s poor electoral performance in these regions.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) has gathered in Boksburg to consider three options: maintaining current provincial structures, reinforcing existing leadership, or implementing more dramatic changes.

“Today really is about putting finality to a matter that has been going on for some time,” said ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, referring to the party’s evaluation of electoral outcomes in both provinces.

The ANC suffered significant losses, securing only 17% of votes in KwaZulu-Natal and 35% in Gauteng. These results contributed to the party’s national support dropping to 40% – its first failure to secure an outright majority since 1994.

Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula warned against relying on unnamed sources for information about the meeting’s outcomes, stating that official announcements would come directly from the party.

The NEC is expected to announce its final decision tomorrow regarding the future of both provincial executive committees.
