JOHANNESBURG – Margaret Arnolds, the MMC (Member of the Mayoral Committee) for Finance in Johannesburg, has called for accountability from the health practitioners at the Westbury Clinic following the tragic deaths of a mother and her child on Sunday.

The incident, which has left the family of Mirriam Singh devastated, has sparked a heated confrontation between Arnolds and clinic staff, as well as provincial representatives. The MMC, who is acting on behalf of the MEC (Member of the Executive Council) for Health, is determined to uncover the truth surrounding the deaths and demand answers from the health practitioners involved.

Family members of the deceased, who were present at the clinic, anxiously waited for clarity on what transpired. Unfortunately, they were left with more questions than answers, as provincial officials gave conflicting statements about the events leading up to the deaths of Singh and her child.

During the tense exchange at Westbury Clinic, Arnolds expressed her frustration, emphasizing that the truth must come to light. “I am still not satisfied, I need the person that was on duty, the one who dealt with the report,” Arnolds stated. “It’s almost like we are on a crime scene; they go out and look for the perpetrator, so we are looking for the person who was on the scene that can tell us what exactly happened. Not one of you knows what happened.”

The MMC’s call for accountability has not been met with silence. She has urged the MEC of Health to take immediate action and compel officials to provide clear and consistent information. Arnolds made it clear that she would not rest until the correct person, responsible for the incident, is held accountable.

“I will not rest until I find the person who can explain what went wrong,” she said.

The tragic deaths have raised many questions about the care and attention given to Mirriam Singh and her child at the Westbury Clinic. Arnolds’ relentless pursuit of answers reflects her commitment to ensuring that the health system is held to the highest standards of care and accountability.
