SOUTH AFRICA: An aggressive altercation between Nobuntu Mkhize, an SABC employee, and FlySafair cabin crew on a flight from Durban to Cape Town on Boxing Day, 26 December 2024, has led to significant consequences. The incident, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, saw Mkhize demand alcohol from the crew before becoming verbally abusive. Despite her claims of sobriety, the crew had to handcuff and restrain her mid-flight.
Mkhize’s disruptive actions have not gone unnoticed, and both the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) have issued strong condemnations. The ANC, where Mkhize is a member, stated that they have launched an investigation into her membership status, calling her behavior “unruly” and contrary to the values of the movement. The SABC also responded with a statement, condemning Mkhize’s conduct. “The SABC encourages staff to uphold our values of respect and integrity in all interactions,” the statement read. They emphasized that they would take internal measures to address the situation.
FlySafair has responded by placing Mkhize on its no-fly list, citing her interference with crew members’ duties, which is a criminal offence under South African aviation law. Airline spokesperson Kirby Gorden confirmed that Mkhize was handed over to the police when the plane landed in Cape Town.
Mkhize, who claims she was “sober as a judge” at the time of the incident, has threatened to take legal action against both FlySafair and the police. She alleges that the crew provoked her by being impolite when she asked about drink options, and she argues that her actions were a response to disrespect. Mkhize has also criticized the airline’s claim that she was intoxicated, stating that no proof was provided.
The altercation took place on a domestic flight between Durban and Cape Town. Passengers filmed the confrontation, which quickly went viral. Witnesses on the flight suggested that Mkhize appeared intoxicated, further adding to the controversy surrounding her outburst. Despite her explanation, which involves claims of provocation, her behavior has led to widespread backlash and formal investigations from both her employer, SABC, and the ANC.
As the situation unfolds, Mkhize now faces significant professional and legal consequences, including potential disciplinary action from the SABC and a legal battle over the events that transpired.
