The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has invited members of South Africa’s progressive caucus, including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), to celebrate its first anniversary at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium this weekend, party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu announced Wednesday.

The celebration in KwaZulu-Natal marks a strategic choice for MK Party, following the province’s strong electoral support in the May 29 national and provincial elections.

“We are extending the invitation to all the parties in the progressive caucus,” Shivambu told journalists at a press briefing. “When they come, we will allow them an opportunity [to convey messages of support].”

The invitation list includes the African Transformation Movement (ATM), National Coloured Congress, and African Unity Congress, whom Shivambu described as “strategic friends” sharing similar interests.

While the party held smaller anniversary rallies in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, the main celebration in KwaZulu-Natal reflects the province’s status as MK Party’s strongest electoral base.

The ATM, led by Vuyo Zungula, has confirmed attendance, directing its members to participate in full force. “ATM Leadership and Members in Kwa-Zulu Natal must attend in big numbers. Please ensure that you sit in one place within the stadium for visibility,” the party stated.

The EFF’s attendance remains uncertain as the party scheduled its elective conference for the same weekend in Johannesburg. EFF leader Julius Malema has previously dismissed the possibility of ties with MK Party.

The gathering comes at a crucial time for South Africa’s opposition landscape, as parties position themselves for potential alliances ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
