The Border Management Authority (BMA) intercepted a human trafficking attempt at the Lebombo border post, arresting a minibus driver who tried to smuggle 14 undocumented children aged 14-16 from Mozambique into South Africa.

The children have been placed under the care of the Social Services Department, according to BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mokgotsi.

“Vigilant border guards intercepted a minibus taxi attempting to smuggle 14 undocumented and unaccompanied children from Mozambique into South Africa through the Lebombo port of entry,” Mokgotsi said.

In a separate operation at Beitbridge border post, BMA officials stopped a group of Bangladesh nationals attempting to enter South Africa without passports.

The Lebombo border post has now resumed normal operations following temporary closures caused by post-election unrest in Mozambique, which had left cargo and travelers stranded.

“The Lebombo Port of Entry has begun processing travellers and goods following minor disruptions that were experienced due to unrest on the Mozambican side,” Mokgotsi confirmed.
