HARARE – Former Zimbabwe Vice President Phekelezela Mphoko died in Dubai while returning from medical treatment in India, Presidential spokesperson George Charamba confirmed Friday. The 84-year-old liberation war veteran had served as vice president from 2014 until the military overthrew Robert Mugabe’s government in 2017.

Mphoko, who was accompanied by his wife Laurinda, had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness in India before his death.

Known by his liberation war name “Report,” Mphoko was among the few surviving former ZPRA commanders who fought in Zimbabwe’s independence struggle. Born on June 11, 1940, he built an extensive diplomatic career serving as Zimbabwe’s ambassador to multiple countries including Mozambique, Austria, Botswana, Russia, and South Africa from 1987.

Under Mugabe’s administration, Mphoko headed the Ministry of National Healing, Peace and Reconciliation. In July 2015, he assumed broader responsibilities for policy coordination and implementation in the government.

Former Information Minister Jonathan Moyo praised Mphoko as “a selfless national liberation hero and gentleman” who demonstrated Pan-Africanism through actions rather than words. “The news of his untimely death is shocking,” Moyo said.

Saviour Kasukuwere, former local government minister and political ally, described Mphoko as a “political giant” who rejected tribalism. “He gave all his life in service of the country.”

Beyond politics, Mphoko maintained business interests as a former shareholder in Choppies Zimbabwe and enjoyed cattle ranching.

Tabeth Kanengoni-Malinga, who served as minister of state in Mphoko’s office, highlighted his leadership qualities: “His wisdom and humility stood out, as did his deep and genuine concern for the well-being of every Zimbabwean, irrespective of their background or status.”

Mphoko’s vice presidency ended during the 2017 military coup that removed Mugabe and installed current President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who had served alongside Mphoko as co-vice president.
